Research interest: I have two primary research foci. One is the human person, and specifically the nature and reality of free will and the nature of consciousness. For the past fifteen years, my research on that topic has engaged the biological and cognitive sciences. The other focus is the foundational character of reality as a whole (competing arguments for theism, pantheism, or metaphysical naturalism). The two interests converge on the question of the place of human beings and other natural complex systems within the whole of reality: how and why have we emerged in a universe structured by fundamental physics?
